Al Ahly won a record sixth CAF African Champions League crown today, after drawing 2-2 with Coton Sport of Cameroon in the second leg of the final. The Egyptian giants, title favourites from the start of the competition in February, triumphed 4-2 on aggregate following their victory in Cairo two weeks ago.

Success for Ahly earned them a $1m cheque, plus a place alongside the likes of Manchester United and Liga de Quito in next month's FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2008.

Ahmed Hassan gave Ahly a 38th-minute lead, before Lassina Karim levelled in first half stoppage time. Ousmaila Baba then edged Coton Sport in front on 63 minutes, but Red Devils captain Shady Mohamed restored parity from a last-minute penalty.

Coton Sport dominated a high-tempo match in baking heat, before a 35,000 crowd at the Roumde-Adja Stadium in Garoua, only to waste a series of chances. The result gave Al Ahly their third Champions League title in four years, and they also finished as runners-up in 2007 after suffering a shock home defeat by Etoile Sahel of Tunisia in the final.

After weathering the predictable early onslaught from their hosts, veteran midfielder Hassan snatched Ahly a precious away goal by flicking a Mohamed Aboutrika cross past goalkeeper Kassaly Daouda. Niger-born Daouda Kamilou was a constant threat to Ahly, though, and he set up the equaliser by pulling the ball back to Karim, who gave goalkeeper Amir Abdulhamid no chance with a firm strike into the bottom corner.

Coton Sport, appearing in their first Champions League final, started the second half like men possessed, and several chances were spurned before Baba atoned for his misses by heading home. Just one minute later, the Cameroonian squandered a glorious chance to score again, shooting timidly at Abdulhamid after finding himself unmarked in the visitors' penalty area.

Ahly endured several more anxious moments before the sting evaporated from Coton Sport in the closing stages, and a foul by Andre Ndame presented Mohamned with the chance to score from the spot. His penalty sent Daouda the wrong way.

The result ended Coton Sport's seven-match winning run at home in the Champions League. It was also the first time they had conceded two goals in Garoua since making their debut in the competition ten years ago.

Ahli see off Zamalek in Cairo derby

Two second-half goals from Ahmed Fathi and Emad Meteb were enough to help Egyptian League leaders Ahli claim a comfortable 2-0 victory over arch-rivals Zamalek on Friday.

Fathi capped an impressive week after breaking the deadlock seven minutes past the hour mark, having opened his Ahli account in the 4-1 midweek victory over Arab Contractors.

Meteb continued his habit of scoring against Zamalek to break his goalscoring duck. Prior to the Cairo derby, the striker's last goal came against Aluminum in December.

He ensured the victory in the 73rd minute after capitalizing on a dreadful error by Zamalek defender Beshir Al-Tabie.

Ahli are flying high on the top of the league table with 54 points, a massive 18 ahead of second-placed Petrojet. They are on the verge of claiming a fourth successive title.

Zamalek lie fifth on 34 points. They aim to finish second in order to book a Champions League spot.

Neither Ahli nor Zamalek managed to break the deadlock in an uninspiring first-half.

Ahli dominated possession in the first ten minutes but never tested Zamalek keeper Mohamed Abdul-Monssif.

Zamalek's first sight of goal came in the 21st minute when Mohamed Aboul-Ella released Amr Zaki with a delicate chip.

The combative striker received the ball with a first-timer but his effort flew high over the crossbar.

Four minutes later, Zamalek midfielder Ahmed Abdul-Raouf tried his luck from 25 yards but his shot was palmed away by Ahli keeper Amir Abdul-Hamid.


Ahli's first real opportunity came in the 36th minute. Gilberto did some neat work down the left flank before providing a pinpoint cross to Meteb.

Meteb cut ahead of Mahmoud Fathallah to flick the ball just over the bar.

Mostafa Gaafar should have put Zamalek in front nine minutes before the break but he horribly missed the target from six yards.

A loose ball slipped into his path, but his mis-hit shot went poorly wide of the target, to the shock of everyone.

Zamalek coach Ruud Krol introduced talented winger Shikabala in the second-half instead of Mohamed Abdullah.

He made an impact shortly after when he released Gamal Hamza with a deft long ball.

Hamza went clear on goal but he needlessly dived to earn a penalty but Italian referee Stefano Farina waved away his claims. The forward was also booked.

Zamalek were made to pay for Hamza's theatrical actions in the 67th minute when Fathi put Ahli ahead.

Flavio's deflected shot went into the path of the unmarked Fathi, who chipped over the advancing Abdul-Monsef.

Meteb ensured the victory six minutes later after taking advantage of a howler from combative defender Al-Tabie.

Al-Tabie's poor back-headed pass was intercepted by Meteb, who made no mistake from close range.

احتفل أحمد فتحي بأول ظهور له في مباريات القمة بتسجيل الهدف الأول في الدقيقة 67 من انفراد بمحمد عبد المنصف حارس الزمالك.

وكسر عماد متعب صياما طويلا عن الأهداف في الدوري الممتاز امتد منذ ديسمبر الماضي، بمضاعفة النتيجة في الدقيقة 73 استغلالا لخطأ فادح من بشير التابعي.

النتيجة رفعت رصيد الأهلي إلى 54 نقطة بفارق 18 نقطة عن طلائع الجيش صاحب المركز الثاني، ليقترب كثيرا من الفوز بدرع الدوري للمرة الرابعة على التوالي.

وظل الزمالك في المركز الخامس برصيد 34 نقطة.

شهد تشكيل الزمالك مفاجآت تسببت في منح الأهلي الأفضلية في معظم فترات المباراة وأثرت سلبا بشكل كبير على أداء الفريق الأبيض.

دفع رود كرول المدير الفني للزمالك بأحمد مجدي في مركز الظهير الثالث بجوار بشير التابعي ومحمود فتح الله على الرغم من أن مجدي لم يلعب مع الفريق الأبيض في هذا المركز من قبل.

وتكون وسط ملعب الزمالك من أحمد عبد الرؤوف ومحمد إبراهيم ومحمد أبو العلا فيما بقى محمود عبد الرازق "شيكابالا" وجمال حمزة بين البدلاء.

تفوق أحمر

سيطر الأهلي على الدقائق العشر الأولى وأرسل أكثر من عرضية وتمريرة بينية خطيرة ولكن دفاع الزمالك تكفل بإبعاد جميع الكرات.

وتركزت الخطورة من جانب جيلبرتو في الجانب الأيسر من الملعب إضافة إلى سيطرة من وسط ملعب الأهلي الذي استطاع تناقل الكرة في يسر، فيما ظل عمرو زكي ومصطفى جعفر مهاجما الزمالك منعزلين في الأمام.

هبط الإيقاع قليلا وبدأ الزمالك في الدخول إلى المباراة مع الدقيقة 20 حينما أهدى زكي تمريرة إلى إبراهيم أطاح بها فوق العارضة.

وأضاع زكي انفرادا بالمرمى بعدها بدقيقة واحدة حينما أطاح بتمريرة أبو العلا فوق العارضة ثم جاءت التسديدة الثالثة من عبد الرؤوف في الدقيقة 25 ولكن أمير عبد الحميد تصدى لها.

ولكن الفرصة الحقيقية الأولى في اللقاء كانت في الدقيقة 36 حينما انطلق جيلبرتو من الجانب الأيسر وأرسل عرضية خطيرة، قابلها متعب من لمسة واحدة ولكن فوق عارضة عبد المنصف.

بعدها بثلاث دقائق، لاحت فرصة نادرة لجعفر عندما جاءته الكرة وهو منفرد تماما بعبد الحميد من داخل منطقة الجزاء ولكنه سدد بعيدا على الرغم من عدم تعرضه لأي مضايقة من الدفاع الأحمر.

عودة الزمالك

عدل مانويل جوزيه من أوضاع فريقه مع بداية الشوط الثاني بدخول أحمد عادل بدلا من أنيس بوجلبان فيما أقحم كرول شيكابالا بدلا من محمد عبد الله.

بدا الزمالك في حال أفضل مع الشوط الثاني واستطاع لاعبوه تناقل الكرة في منتصف ملعب الأهلي ولكن دفاع الأخير ظل يقظا.

دخل جمال حمزة بديلا لجعفر وكاد أن يسجل للزمالك في الدقيقة 65 عندما استلم تمريرة حريرية من شيكابالا وضعته وجها لوجه مع عبد الحميد ولكنه سقط أرضا، مطالبا بركلة جزاء ولكن الحكم رد بإشهار البطاقة الصفراء في وجه مهاجم الزمالك.

وافتتح فتحي التسجيل بعد مرور 22 دقيقة من الشوط الثاني عندما تابع تسديدة من فلافيو ارتطمت بأحد مدافعي الزمالك وسقطت في طريق الظهير الدولي الذي وجد نفسه في مواجهة عبد المنصف.

ولم يفكر فتحي كثيرا ولمس الكرة لتذهب من فوق رأس عبد المنصف المتقدم إلى داخل شباك الزمالك، ليضع بصمته في أول لقاء قمة يخوضه منذ انضمامه للأهلي.

ضرب الأهلي بقوة بعد الهدف لحسم المباراة وتحقق له ما أراد بعد ست دقائق عن طريق متعب، الذي استغل خطأ لا يغتفر من التابعي.

وحاول التابعي إعادة كرة طولية برأسه إلى عبد المنصف ولكن تمريرته جاءت قصيرة ليخطفها متعب ويضعها من لمسة واحدة في المرمى.

Ahly Club Statement About Hadary's Saga

The Committee of Football of Ahly Club issued a meeting to discuss all the events associated with the departure of Ahly’s player, Essam El Hadary, to Switzerland without permission form Ahly’s administration. Furthermore, Essam El Hadary signed a contract with F.C. Sion while he is still on contract with Al-Ahly, which was effective in Early January 2007 until the end of season 2009/2010. The Football committee is revealing the following clarifications and decisions:

1) Ahly’s director of Marketing received a phone call from the player, confirmation that representatives from an European club will come to Cairo to negotiate about his transfer.

2) Representatives from Swiss Club F.C. Sion arrived to the headquarters of Al-Ahly club and they were received by the director of Marketing. The Swiss club requested to buy the player’s contract for only $400 thousand US dollars, in addition to 50% if the player is sold to another club.

3) The player spoke directly to Al-Ahly club president and Vice-President about the offer from the Swiss club. The president and Vice present, both confirmed the impossibility to approve the transfer of any player during the season, especially in Essam’s case, as the club will be exposed to massive technical risk, since the team will continue the domestic league as well as start the African Champions League with only 2 goal-keepers, as the domestic and African transfer period closed in January 2008. Furthermore, the Swiss offer is neither appropriate nor commensurate to Ahly’s name and player’s history.

4) Based on the mentioned conditions, the player was asked to postpone his transfer till the end of the season which is after 3 months. The meeting amongst Ahly Marketing director and Sion’s representatives was called off on that basis.

5) On the next day of the meeting that took place between Ahly Marketing director and Sion representatives, Al-Ahly received a letter from Swiss Club Sion, mentioning that their side has sealed an agreement with the player about his transfer, and inviting Ahly president to Geneva to conclude the transfer. The letter claimed that the Swiss club obtained an approval from Al-Ahly’s side for the transfer, and that never happened.

6) After only 2 hours of the receipt of the letter mentioned in clause 5, the Egyptian Football Association received a letter from the Swiss Federation on the 15^th of February 2008, requesting the player’s international card, with information about the latest official match played with Al-Ahly.

7) Al-Ahly closed any sort of negotiations about that issue, especially that Sion’s offer is completely rejected and that was made clear to the president of F.C. Sion in his brief visit to Cairo, in addition to the fact that the player is in preparatory training for the first encounter of the League’s second leg, as Essam played that match on the 20^th of February 2008.

8) On the morning of Thursday 21^st of February 2008, Ahly club was surprised by the player’s departure to Switzerland, without informing anybody from the club about his departure nor about the reasons that prompted him to do so

9) Administration of Ahly club sent a letter to the Egyptian Football Association requesting the suspension of the player for an indefinite period, and NOT to send the international card, as the player is on an ongoing contract with Al-Ahly club.

10) The Egyptian Football Association supported Al-Ahly after fully examining the situation, and replied back to the Swiss Football Association, confirming the invalidity of the transition of the player to F.C.Sion, and therefore not sending the international card.

11) Al-Ahly sent a letter to the Swiss club, expressing its astonishment from its claim that Al-Ahly approved the transfer, as that never happened … Essam El Hadary’s contract is still ongoing till the end of the season of 2009/2010 …The player is recorded on the annals of the Egyptian and African Associations …The letter confirmed that Al-Ahly club will take all the legal procedures to reserve the rights of the club against any abuse… Ahly club enclosed a copy of the letter sent by the Egyptian Association to the Swiss Association refusing to send the International Card.

12) The player appeared in a press conference wearing the official jersey of the Swiss Club F.C.Sion and announced the transfer in the media. Player’s appearance and statement confirms beyond any doubt that he has signed for the Swiss Club, while he is on an ongoing-contract with Ahly club.

Accordingly, Ahly club decided the following:

A) Take all measures and procedures that preserve its rights with all involved parties in this issue.

B) File a complaint with all related documents to the case at the International Federation of Football Association (FIFA) via the Egyptian Football Association against the player and the Swiss Club.

At the end, Al-Ahly Club expresses its disappointment for all the irresponsible actions taken by the player and steps taken by the Swiss club and each party that was involved in the illegal methods. At the time, where Ahly administration is keen about the club’s best interest, fans’ ambitions and feelings and worries about the future of the players. For example the club administration, agreed about the transfer and loan of three major and main players on the team and during the season: Mohamed Shawky to the English club Middlesbrough, Wael Gomma to Sailia of Qatar, and Hassan Mustapha to Wehda of Saudia Arabia, with the acknowledgement that all these transfers were done within the conditions that suited the club and in the appropriate time.
